Uniform Confidence Bands in Deconvolution with Unknown Error Distribution

چکیده
This paper develops a method to construct confidence bands in deconvolution when the error distribution is unknown. We work with the case where an auxiliary sample from the error distribution is available and the error density is ordinary smooth. The construction is based upon the “intermediate” Gaussian approximation and the Gaussian multiplier bootstrap, but not on explicit limit distributions such as Gumbel distributions, which enables us to prove validity of the multiplier bootstrap confidence band under weak regularity conditions. Importantly, the previous literature on this topic has focused on the case where the error distribution is known, but has not covered the case with unknown error distribution. However, in many applications, the assumption that the error density is known is unrealistic, and the present paper fills this important void. In addition, we also discuss extensions of the results on confidence bands to super-smooth error densities. We conduct simulation studies to verify the performance of the multiplier bootstrap confidence band in the finite sample. Finally, we apply our method to Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Auction Data and draw confidence bands for the density of common values of mineral rights on oil and gas tracts.

Nonparametric confidence bands in deconvolution density estimation
Uniform confidence bands for densities f via nonparametric kernel estimates were first constructed by Bickel and Rosenblatt [Ann. Statist. 1, 1071–1095]. In this paper this is extended to confidence bands in the deconvolution problem g = f ∗ ψ for an ordinary smooth error density ψ. Under certain regularity conditions, we obtain asymptotic uniform confidence bands based on the asymptotic distri...
متن کاملEstimating smooth distribution function in the presence of heteroscedastic measurement errors
Measurement error occurs in many biomedical fields. The challenges arise when errors are heteroscedastic since we literally have only one observation for each error distribution. This paper concerns the estimation of smooth distribution function when data are contaminated with heteroscedastic errors. We study two types of methods to recover the unknown distribution function: a Fourier-type deco...
متن کاملStatistical inference for inverse problems
In this paper we study statistical inference for certain inverse problems. We go beyond mere estimation purposes and review and develop the construction of confidence intervals and confidence bands in some inverse problems, including deconvolution and the backward heat equation. Further, we discuss the construction of certain hypothesis tests, in particular concerning the number of local maxima...
متن کاملBootstrap Partial Linear Quantile Regression and Confidence Bands∗
In this paper uniform confidence bands are constructed for nonparametric quantile estimates of regression functions. The method is based on the bootstrap, where resampling is done from a suitably estimated empirical density function (edf) for residuals. It is known that the approximation error for the uniform confidence band by the asymptotic Gumbel distribution is logarithmically slow. It is p...
متن کاملThe effects of error magnitude and bandwidth selection for deconvolution with unknown error distribution.
The error distribution is generally unknown in deconvolution problems with real applications. A separate independent experiment is thus often conducted to collect the additional noise data in those studies. In this paper, we study the nonparametric deconvolution estimation from a contaminated sample coupled with an additional noise sample. A ridge-based kernel deconvolution estimator is propose...
